The day vs night problem

One blackout blind handles night, but daytime needs something different

Full blackout fabric is great at night and useless during the day — you either sit in the dark or pull the blind up and lose all privacy. Living rooms, apartments and street-facing windows need two modes, not one.
  • Daytime: you want light in, but not strangers looking straight into the lounge.
  • Evening: you want soft diffused light, not direct glare from the western sun.
  • Night: you want full blackout — no street light, no spill from outside.
  • One blind can't do all three. Two blinds in the same system can.

Two blinds, one fitted system.

Full blackout on the front, sheer or light-filter mounted behind it, shared side tracks, two motors on one remote. Click any step to see how it fits together.

  • Dual blind system over two bedroom windows, sheer and blackout blinds in black frames.

Two modes

What “dual” actually means.

One fitted frame, one remote, two independent blinds. Drop the sheer for daytime privacy. Drop the blackout for properly dark — any time of day.

Day mode living room with the sheer blind down, soft daylight through the window.

Day mode

Sheer down.

Sheer or light-filter fabric down. Soft, filtered daylight in.

Night mode living room with the blackout blind fully down over the window.

Night mode

Blackout down.

Rear blackout blind drops to the sill. Sealed at all four edges, properly dark.

Decide before you customise

Add SmartHub now, or keep it simple.

Both options include the dual system — sheer/light-filter blind + blackout blind, shared side tracks, pelmet and the 16-channel remote that drives both blinds. SmartHub is the app + voice layer on top. Google, Alexa, Amazon Home schedules and routines.

John at Midnight Anytime Blinds was great — really happy with the customer service provided and the blinds are awesome. We're ordering more for other bedrooms we love them so much.

Great product, great service. No 6-week wait — from phone call to install only 1.5 weeks. John and Luke were quick with the install, they had a small challenge with our window frame but it was easily overcome. We would highly recommend MAB for service and quality. Best product to turn day into night.

Very easy to install and they look amazing. We have just ordered more for our other bedrooms. A++

I first got in touch with John, who clearly explained all the details and was extremely professional. The blinds arrived after a few weeks, and converting my existing blinds to motorised ones was incredibly easy. The rail quality is excellent, and everything works perfectly — no light coming through at all. He also provides aftercare service which I thought was good.

Wish we had done it sooner. Now the little one can get a good sleep and it helps keep her room cooler in summer months. John and the team were great to deal with and we look forward to having you back to finish off our home.

The DIY case for the full system

Standard blinds leave gaps. The MAB kit doesn't.

A blackout fabric on its own isn't a blackout system. The halo around the brackets, the side curl, the glow under the bottom rail — those are the four points light leaks. A DIY MAB kit ships the same edge-sealing components the pro install does.

You don't pay more to wait three weeks for a quote.

  • Light leaks around brackets, side gaps, and the sill
  • Most off-the-shelf blackout blinds skip side tracks
  • MAB ships the same complete system DIY or pro
  • 100% money-back guarantee at order

How it works

Four steps. One afternoon.

Check fit, measure, customise, install. The same MAB system either pathway. DIY ships Australia-wide; pro install is available across key metro service areas.

  1. Two black-frame blackout blinds half-lowered over bedroom windows.

    Check your window

Confirm reveal depth (70mm for a single, 90mm for a dual). Send a photo if you're not sure — we'll tell you what fits before you buy.

    • 70mm depth single / 90mm dual
    • Photo suitability check is free
    • Use the window suitability guide
  2. Hands measuring a window reveal with a steel tape measure.

    Measure carefully

Width at three points. Height at three points. Use the smallest width and the largest height so the blind sits cleanly inside the tracks.

    • Step-by-step measuring guide
    • Steel tape + spirit level recommended
    • Photo + video support if you're stuck
  3. Customer configuring a blackout blind online at a laptop.

    Customise & order

Open the configurator, enter your dimensions, choose fabric, frame, motor and any add-ons. Live price as you build. No three-week wait for a quote.

    • Live price updates with every choice
    • Four frame finishes, six fabrics
    • SmartHub + extra remotes optional
  4. DIY install — fitting a black-frame blackout blind with a cordless drill.

    Install in an afternoon

30 minutes per window — under an hour with two people. Basic tools, phone and video support if anything looks off.

    • Drill, screwdriver, level, tape
    • Phone + video support every step
    • Installation guide walks you through it

Frequently asked questions

  • The standalone product has one blind — a full blackout blind. The Dual Blind System has two blinds in the same fitted frame: a sheer or light-filter blind for daytime privacy plus a blackout blind for night. If you want daytime privacy without full darkness, the dual system is what handles both modes.
  • Two blinds running in the same side tracks need more depth than a single blind. 90mm is the minimum to fit both blind tubes plus their fabric paths cleanly. Shallower reveals are limited to the single blackout system, or may need a face-mount approach — check Window Suitability before ordering.
  • Yes. The 16-channel remote can pair to each blind independently. You can run the sheer down on its own, the blackout down on its own, or set up groups so day-mode and night-mode are one-tap actions.
  • There are sheer and light-filter fabric options for the rear sheer blind. Exact pairings depend on your room and the blackout fabric you choose — the team will confirm fabric options at quote.
  • With the SmartHub accessory, the dual system supports app and voice control via compatible Google, Alexa and Amazon Home setups. Group both blinds by room, schedule day-mode for the morning and night-mode for sundown. Confirm compatibility with your specific hub before ordering if smart control is essential to your setup.
  • Yes — same DIY pathway as the single system. The dual kit ships with both blinds, both motors and shared side tracks. Make sure your reveal is at least 90mm deep before ordering. If you're not confident with two motors in one frame, professional install is the safer pathway.
  • Australian designed and made (current product line). The dual system uses the same hardware family as the standalone blackout product, engineered in Australia for Australian homes, climates and window types. Confirm specific Australian Made status at order if it's a deciding factor for you.
