The living-room problem

The lounge has to work both ways.
Most blinds do one.

A blackout blind on its own makes the living room feel like a cave in the middle of the day. A sheer on its own does nothing when the afternoon sun is washing out the television. Heavy curtains try to do both jobs and do neither well. The living room is the room where you actually want a choice: light and a view through the day, full darkness when the movie starts or the morning is slow. The fix is two blinds in the one window, run from a single remote.

  • A blackout blind alone turns the lounge into a cave at midday.
  • A sheer alone does nothing about afternoon sun washing out the TV.
  • Heavy curtains try to do both jobs and do neither well.
  • Standard blockout blinds leave all four edges glowing anyway.
  • The living room is the one room where you want the choice, hour to hour.

Watch the living room actually go dark.

No dimmer. No mood lighting. The same window in the same room — open, then sealed. Drop the blind, kill the light.

Two blinds, one frame.

In a living room the system is usually a Dual Blind System: a sheer and a blackout inside the same frame and pelmet. One clean finish on the window, two completely different modes. A single blackout blind also works for a lounge that just wants evening control.

  • Dual blind system in day mode — sheer lowered, soft daylight in the living room.

Both are blinds. Only one is built around the whole window — side tracks, pelmet, bottom rail.

Living-room scenarios

Daylight and darkness, same window.

Open-plan lounges do everything — morning light, afternoon TV, movie nights, guests on the sofa bed. Two blinds in one frame switch the room between all of it.

  • Daytime light and privacy

Sheer down: natural light and the view stay, while the street loses its view in.

  • Afternoon sun off the TV

Soften the glare while the cricket's on — without going full blackout at 3pm.

  • Movie night, properly dark

Blackout down over the sheer and the four edges close. Cinema-dark on the couch.

  • Sofa-bed sleepovers

When guests stay, the lounge doubles as a bedroom that can actually get dark.

  • No chains, no cords

Cordless and motorised — a cleaner, safer look in the room everyone lives in.

  • One remote, both blinds

A couple of presses from open to fully dark. Add SmartHub for schedules and voice.

Living-room windows run wide — a single blind covers openings up to about 3 metres, and wider spans use more than one blind side by side.

Quick answers.

  • The Motorised Blackout Blind is a single motorised blackout shade inside the frame. The Dual Blind System pairs two blinds in the same window: a sheer or light-filtering blind for daytime privacy with natural light, plus a blackout blind for total darkness. The dual setup needs a deeper reveal, around 90 mm at the top versus around 70 mm for a single. Use the window suitability guide to confirm what fits. For a full side-by-side comparison, see the product comparison.
  • The MAB framed system is designed to cut the light leaks that standard roller and blockout blinds leave around the sides, top and bottom of the window. Whether the result feels like total darkness depends on your window, the reveal depth, and how carefully it's measured and installed. Most customers find it far darker than anything they've used before. Use the window suitability guide before ordering to confirm the system will work for your window.
  • The blackout blind sits between two side tracks that run the full height of the window. A pelmet at the top covers the roller mechanism and closes the gap above the fabric. A sealed bottom rail meets the windowsill. Light usually gets in around the edges of a normal blind. The MAB frame covers those edges. The fabric does its job; the frame does the harder job of closing the gaps.
  • Yes. DIY kits ship Australia-wide and include the motorised blind, the frame components (pelmet, side tracks, bottom rail), the rechargeable motor, a charging cable, fixings and a setup guide. Most customers find the install straightforward with two hand tools and a second pair of hands. Before ordering, work through the Window Suitability guide and the Measuring Guide.
  • Adelaide & Perth customers benefit from our Salisbury Plains & Bibra Lake facility with faster turnaround times, personalised service, and top-quality locally crafted blinds.

There are no cords or chains, making them a much safer option for homes with children and pets.

I first got in touch with John, who clearly explained all the details and was extremely professional. The blinds arrived after a few weeks, and converting my existing blinds to motorised ones was incredibly easy. The rail quality is excellent, and everything works perfectly — no light coming through at all.

A dual system needs a little more depth.

A single blackout blind generally needs around 70 mm of reveal depth at the top. A dual sheer-and-blackout system needs around 90 mm, since two blinds share the pelmet. Both need roughly 30 mm of side clearance and 20 mm at the front. If you're not sure your window has the depth, send a photo with rough measurements and the team will confirm before you order.
