The light-gap problem
Most blackout blinds aren't actually blackout
They cover the fabric area but leave light coming in around the sides, the top and the bottom. The fabric isn't the issue — the gaps are. A 100% blockout fabric still leaks light if the surrounding hardware lets daylight in around the edges, and that's what most off-the-shelf roller blinds and blockout curtain combinations do.
- Top edge: light spills over the roller and around the bracket between the blind and the wall above the window.
- Side edges: fabric is narrower than the window, doesn't seal against the wall and moves in any breeze.
- Bottom edge: the blind sits above the sill or skirting, leaving a wedge of morning light to land on the bed.
- Hardware gaps: cord channels, brackets, mounting points and joins all create points where light gets in.
- Curtain rails create their own gap above the curtain — even premium blockout curtains leak at the top.
- Fabric stretches and sags over time, opening micro-gaps that didn't exist when the blind was new.
- Standard blackout blinds rely on the fabric alone, with no edge sealing — that's the part that fails.
- Multiple layers (curtain + blind) compound the problem because each layer has its own gaps.
