The bedroom problem

The bedroom problem isn't fabric.
It's edges.

Standard blockout blinds dim the fabric. They don't darken the room. Light still gets through at the sides and the top — which is why summer sunrises and streetlights make it through. By 5am that's enough to pull you out of deep sleep, and the rest of the day is spent catching up. The fix isn't a darker fabric. It's a system that closes the gaps around the window.

  • Streetlights cut in around the sides of standard blinds.
  • The roller leaves a halo of light above the blind at sunrise.
  • The bottom rail sits above the sill, leaving a wedge of morning light that lands on the bed.
  • Heavy curtains dim the room but leave gaps at the rail and along the floor.
  • Layering curtain over blind compounds the problem because each layer brings its own gaps.

Watch the bedroom actually go dark.

No dimmer. No mood lighting. The same window in the same room — open, then sealed. Drop the blind, kill the light.

Built around the whole opening.

Side tracks, top pelmet, sealed bottom rail and a quiet motor work together to close the four edges where standard blinds and blackout curtains leave gaps. The fabric is the easy bit.

  • Close-up of the aluminium side track on a motorised blackout blind.

Compare the pair

How our blinds stack up against a standard roller.

Both are blinds. Only one is built around the whole window — side tracks, pelmet, bottom rail.

Bedroom scenarios

Same room, six different bedtimes.

The bedroom isn't one room. It's a kid's room at 7pm, a master at 6am, a shift worker's recovery cave at 11am, and a holiday rental every weekend in between. The system works the same for all of them.

  • Sleep through the morning

Sunrise stops at the frame. The bedroom stays the dark it was at 2am, until you decide otherwise.

  • Settle the kids

Lower the blind from the doorway — no reaching across cots, no cords anywhere near the bed.

  • Whisper-quiet motor

Quiet enough to move the blind from bed without waking the person next to you.

  • Streetlights, sealed out

Side tracks close the edge gaps where suburban and city streetlights find every ordinary blind.

  • Partners on different schedules

Early starts and late shifts in one bed. Run each blind from the remote without turning on a light.

  • Guest rooms and holiday homes

A built-in finish that gives every guest a properly dark room — no instructions needed.

Your existing curtains can stay, too — the system mounts inside the reveal, so the blackout no longer depends on the curtain doing any of the work.

Quick answers.

  • The system is designed for 100% blackout. Side tracks run down both sides of the window, the top pelmet covers the roller, and a weighted bottom rail seals against the sill. Fit accuracy decides the outcome, so check window suitability first to confirm your reveal works before you order.
  • If light is what's waking you, they're built for exactly that. The sealed frame creates a completely dark room at any time of day — which is why shift workers, parents with babies and light sleepers are the people who use them most.
  • Easier than with curtains. The motorised remote means the blind opens quietly without reaching across the bed. No chain pulls or rattle. If you'd like to add SmartHub, you can run schedules so the blind opens at your wake time and stays closed otherwise.
  • Yes, slightly. The system includes a ~90 mm top pelmet, space for the fabric to drop (about three fingers' width) and a ~50 mm bottom rail. You'll lose some visible window space — that's what allows the system to fully block light.
  • No. The motor is rechargeable, charged via USB-C — typically once per change of season, depending on use. There's no hardwiring required for a standard install.
  • Wider openings use multiple blinds side by side. Each blind sits in its own frame, so there'll be a vertical join (centre post) where they meet. A minimum 90 mm reveal is required for this setup.
  • Sometimes. The standard MAB system is reveal-mounted with a small number of fixings. Renters usually need landlord approval, or look at the Transforma Retrofit System, a retrofit option designed for less invasive installs that can travel with you. Mention you're renting during the suitability check and we'll talk through what's realistic for your lease.
  • Adelaide & Perth customers benefit from our Salisbury Plains & Bibra Lake facility with faster turnaround times, personalised service, and top-quality locally crafted blinds.

I first got in touch with John, who clearly explained all the details and was extremely professional. The blinds arrived after a few weeks, and converting my existing blinds to motorised ones was incredibly easy. The rail quality is excellent, and everything works perfectly — no light coming through at all. He also provides aftercare service which I thought was good.

Great product, great service. From phone call to install only a week and a half. John and Luke were quick with the install, they had a small challenge with our window frame but it was easily overcome. We would highly recommend MAB for service and quality. Best product to turn day into night.

Not sure your bedroom window will work?

Reveal-mount fit generally needs around 70 mm of top depth for a single blackout blind, or 90 mm for a dual setup, plus 30 mm of side clearance and 20 mm at the front edge. If you're unsure — shallow reveal, sliding window, handles or winders in the way — send a photo with rough measurements and the team will confirm before you order.
